What is the Luberon?
The Luberon is a mountain range and natural regional park in the south of France, in the heart of Provence. It is famous for its hilltop villages, stone farmhouses (“mas”), lavender fields, vineyards and soft light.
For many travellers, the word “Luberon” means dream Provence: market mornings, long lunches in the shade of plane trees, evenings on a terrace with views over the valley and quiet country roads between vines and olive trees.
Where is the Luberon area of France?
The Luberon sits between Avignon and Aix-en-Provence, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. It is around 3h from Paris, around 40 minutes from Avignon TGV and 1h10 from Aix-en-Provence TGV, with easy access from Marseille-Provence airport.
Mas de l’Olivier is just outside Lacoste, in the so-called “Golden Triangle”: Lacoste, Bonnieux, Goult, Ménerbes, Roussillon and Gordes are all within a short drive.
The best villages to visit in the Luberon
Around Lacoste you’ll find a string of classic hilltop villages within a short drive. Each has its own mood: some are lively with restaurants and shops, others quieter and more intimate.
Lacoste
Small, romantic and quieter than Gordes or Roussillon, with castle ruins and wide valley views.
Bonnieux
A classic Luberon village with excellent restaurants, cafés and a beautiful weekly market.
Gordes
The most famous village in the Luberon – spectacular views, best visited early or late in the day.
Ménerbes & Goult
Ménerbes offers elegant stone streets; Goult feels very lived-in with a charming village square.
Roussillon
Unique ochre cliffs and colored facades, plus a short ochre trail that’s perfect for families.
Lourmarin
On the south side of the Luberon, with a château, chic shops and a famous Friday market.
Tip: from Mas de l’Olivier most of these villages are 10–25 minutes away by car, so you can visit a different village each day and still enjoy the pool and garden in the afternoon.
